Cape Town - Cas Coovadia, chief executive of the Banking Association of South Africa (Basa), told members of the parliamentary standing committee on finance that President Jacob Zuma’s billion rand guarantee fund for housing “exists only in theory”.

“The country of about 9 million people, most of them desperately poor, has struggled with political instability and has no real construction standards. In November 2008, following the collapse of a school in Petionville, the mayor of Port-au-Prince estimated about 60 percent of the buildings were shoddily built and unsafe in normal circumstances.”

The increasing importance of industrialized building, as the demand for housing accelerates and outstrips the capacity of traditional construction methods to provide it, is highlighted by this book, whose very publication should give new impetus to the indus- trialized building trend.

Independent research, carried out by Arup Research and Development, highlighted the energy savings that can be achieved by utilising thermal mass. Comparing lightweight timber homes with medium weight and heavyweight masonry and concrete homes, the research found that the latter has the lowest total energy consumption and therefore CO2 emissions over the lifetime of the house, due to the reduced need for air conditioning and reduced winter heating requirements.

A building concept developed in the Eastern Cape holds promise for entrepreneurs in rural areas who would like to enter the township development and farm housing markets.
